Fourth of July Island style

Our celebration began on the night of the third with a race on the runway. The race began at 9:30p.m. the runway lights were on. Apparently this was a big deal as not too often are people allowed on the runway. The race was 2.8 miles and was open to runners and bikers. Greg and Louis both ran. And, Greg won!
The prize was originally said to be a can of Bud Light, but was upgraded to a can of Corona (is this an upgrade? I don't know.) Here is Greg accepting his award.

After the race, we all went over to the Captain Brooks, the local pub. At the pub, they serve pizza, beer, wine and . . . you'll never guess . . . DIET DR PEPPER!!!! Who knew? Pam loves it when the Captain Brooks is open. The other place you can get DDP is at the bowling alley - only on Saturday nights, though.
The next day was the much anticipated Slow Bike Race! I thought it was a joke, but no, some people can go really slow on a bike. Apparently, not me. Not even close.

Here's Greg and Louis in their heat with Doc. Doc appears to be winning at this point, but soon puts his foot down and is disqualified. Louis, after 2 warnings, is disqualified for actually traveling backwards. The rules were very strict!

Here's a little clip of how really slow it is. this is not Slow Motion!

Guess who won? Yep, Greg is the fastest and the slowest on island. For this he got a can of Miller Light!

In the evening, the party was in the All Hands Club. We had a lovely dinner of steak, Alaskan crab legs, and sashimi! The sashimi was delicious - fresh caught tuna. After dinner we all enjoyed a variety of activities. Louis with his good friend (I don't know his name) played foosball.

Louis and Pam learned a new game; Thai poker! Louis did quite well, winning $18.00. Everyone on island loves Louis. They don't see kids out here too often. The Thai's in particular really enjoy playing with him, teasing him, shaking his hand, etc.

Ping Pong. For awhile Pam and Doc were unbeatable.

And of course, the wonderful Chugach Band. Here, Louis and his friend Jessica (one of the volunteers) sing along and play the bongos. The band is great. They play mostly 80's cover songs with a strong Thai accent.

The Goldsmith family needs to do a ceiling tile at the "All Hands Club". And send photos.
