Satellite Tags

We got word that the biologists and volunteers were putting satellite tags on some of the Albatross, so we rushed out to find them and caught the tail end of the process.

They had chosen 2 really healthy looking birds that are about to fly off for the first time. In this picture, Greg is holding the bird while Rikeem holds onto the birds beak. John is attaching the tag.

Attaching the satellite tag.

It's pretty small and is attached with a harness around the birds chest.
It has a small antenna and a solar panel.

When they were done, the bird just walked away.
We went looking for them after dinner last night. One of them was still hanging around, but didn't seem to be bothered by the tag. Soon, we'll be able to see where he is by way of a website.
