Welcome! We chose to create a blog about our Midway experience because so many people asked us so many questions about the visit, and, well, most of them we could not answer!
The introduction goes something like this: Greg works for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a biologist, and has travelled to Midway previously to teach boating classes. He got the opportunity to go again on a 6-week work detail as the Deputy Refuge Manager, and lucky for all of us, Pam and Louis were able to come as well. Alassane, however, has a job, and will be taking over what would have been Pam's summer job as well, so unfortunately she could not come with us. But we started the trip with a week on O`ahu, which was very fun, and you may see some of the photos from that part of the trip here also.
OK, on with it. We arrived last night after dark, because there are a LOT of birds here that fly around during the day, and big birds and airplanes don't mix well. So we rode in a 1962 Gulfstream 1 twin propeller aircraft that seats 17, for a 4.5 hour flight NW from Honolulu. Here is Louis' view from the jumpseat of the aircraft, where he sat for the landing.
We found nice accomodations in "Charlie Barracks", a 3 story officers dormitory from the time of the U.S. Naval Air Station here. Louis has his own room, which includes a living room, bedroom, bathroom, refrigerator, etc. They are really pretty nice, considering the age of the buildings.
We miss everyone at home, and look forward to sending more pictures and descriptions your way. There is a lot to cover. Bye for now, it IS Saturday, and we are soon going snorkeling. Head on swivel, since Pam already saw a 10 foot tiger shark cruising the beaches.
